Proof Summary There seems to be a lot of discrepancy and confusion concerning the birth date and place. George Rosencrantz was born during a time period where few primary records concerning vital statistics were created. Therefore, it is difficult to know with absolute certainty the date and place of his birth. No one source, including: census records, death certificate, original headstone, obituary, or secondary material agree on every detail of birth. George’s death certificate states that he was born 31 January 1844 in Missouri. The 1900 United States census states that he was born in January 1845 in Missouri. The 1880 Census states that George was born in Illinois and his age in the census points to 1845. An obituary published following his death states that he was born in Jackson County, Missouri on Jan. 31, 1843. George’s original headstone lists the date 4 January 1845, while Family Tree states the birth as 1 January 1844 in Nauvoo, Illinois. A DUP history of George submitted by Mary Elizabeth Sorneson and located on the memory section on Family Tree states that George was born 31 Jan. 1844, in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. From all of the sources it seems safe to state that George was born in the month of January. However, there is still some uncertainty as to the day, year, and place. It is important to note that the two records created during George’s lifetime (1880, and 1900 censuses) both point to the year 1845. Thus, giving some evidence that 1845 was the actual year of birth. Regardless, it is still impossible to state with one hundred percent accuracy as to the date and place of birth.
