Newton County (Missouri) Recorder of Deeds, Marriage records, 1865-1916; marriage index, 1879-1921 (Salt Lake City, Utah: Genealogical Society of Utah, 1973), database with images, FamilySearch.org, entry for William Niswanger and Mary Austin (10 July 1877), "Marriage records, 1865-1916; marriage index, 1879-1921” image 430; citing Newton County, Missouri, p. 289 Recorder of Deeds, FHL microfilm 929788..

There is strong indirect evidence that William Henry Niswanger married Mary Austin following the death of his first wife Mary Martin. Mary Martin died in Newton County, Missouri in 1873. An 1877 marriage for a William Niswanger and a Mrs. Mary Austin was found in Newton County, Missouri. Although the record does not give direct evidence that it is the correct William Niswanger, the marriage falls into the time line, since William’s wife had been dead for about four years. Also, the record stated that it was a second marriage for Mary Austin, giving some evidence that the couple was older. The marriage also occurred in Newton County, Missouri where the correct William lived and later died. Another piece of evidence for William’s second marriage is that in the 1880 federal census, there was only one William Niswanger living in Newton County, Missouri. This William was living with his wife Mary and was the right age and born in the right place. William’s 1882 probate also gives more evidence as the probate names his surving children and also mentions a surviving widow named Mary. Furthermore, a Mary Niswagner (widow) was located in the 1900 census living in Newton County, Missouri with her daughter Calista and was born in New York, the same as the Mary from the 1880 census.
