Proof Summary There is a conflict in information regarding the birthplace of Jesse Molen. On his headstone it is listed that Jesse was born in Henry County Virginia and on his death register information it is listed that he was born in Kings County Virginia. It is most likely that the correct information can be found on his headstone. The headstone has a lot of information about both him and his wife. His wife has a listed birthplace as well and hers is correct. It is also very likely that the person who ordered the headstone was someone who knew them well and would have close to correct information about Jesse and his wife. The information that is found on the death register is less likely to be correct. The death register has a date that is also in question. It is also unknown who gave the death information to the person creating the register. It is also uncertain what is exactly meant by Kings County Virginia. There is no place named Kings County. Even in the early 1800s there was not a County named Kings. There are a few counties that it could be possibly referring to, such as King George County, King William County, or King and Queen County but there is no Kings County. Since the death register has other information that is in question and the birth location listed doesn’t exist, it is most likely that the headstone is correct and Jesse Molen was born in Henry County Virginia.

Salt Lake County, Utah, Salt Lake County Death Records, 1849-1949 (Salt Lake City, Utah: Management and Archives), database with images, familysearch, Jesse Molen, 16 March 1851; citing Great Salt Lake City, Great Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States, p. 3, no. 97; Management and Archives, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah; FHL microfilm 004139616.

Proof Summary There is a conflict with two different death dates for Jesse Molen. Jesse Molen shows up on the 1850 Mortality schedule for Utah, stating he died in March of 1850 and he also shows up on the death register of Great Salt Lake, Utah as having died on 16th March 1851. It is likely that the correct date of death is 1850. This is the record that comes first. All the information listed for Jesse is correct. This same year he did not show up on the 1850 census with his family. His oldest son is listed as Head of Household. It is possible that Jesse’s name was added to the death register a year after his death, making the register’s listed death date incorrect, however it is more likely, due to the matching month on both records, that at some point during a copying process the date was copied down incorrectly. This record also has other information that is in question about validity. Due to the multiple errors that are possible on the death register it is not the most reliable source. It is also most likely that he died in 1850 because he would not have been listed as deceased on the Mortality Schedule in 1850 if he was alive. This means the date that is probably the correct death date is March 1850.
