Proof Summary
Family tradition has indicated that Roxanna Woods died in either Kirtland or Nauvoo, and neither is correct. She migrated to Missouri with her husband and a few of her children, where her husband died. She and her children then left Missouri and went to Clayton Township, Adams, Illinois. The Fredonia Censor states her death place as Clayton County, Illinois, but since there is no such county, we have concluded that the New York newspaper mistakenly reported Clayton Township as Clayton County.
Although Roxanna Woods was listed in the 1842 Nauvoo census, she was marked as "dead." It is believed that she was listed as a deceased family member, not as a resident of Nauvoo. Roxanna's daughter, Charlotte, was enumerated in Nauvoo in the 1840 census, and her younger siblings appear to have been living with her. However, Roxanna and her son Carlos died before the family moved to Hancock County.
There is also a record of Roxanna in the Old Nauvoo Burial Ground files, but her entry was created from the 1842 Nauvoo census listing. She was not listed in the Nauvoo sexton's record.
